परिभाषा (Definition)

नेपाली: कुनै व्यक्ति, वस्तु, स्थान, पशुपक्षी, पदार्थ वा भाव बुझाउने शब्दलाई नाम भनिन्छ।
English: A word that functions as the name of a specific object or set of objects, such as living creatures, places, actions, qualities, states of existence, or ideas.

१. व्यक्तिवाचक नाम (Proper Noun)

परिभाषा: कुनै खास व्यक्ति, तोकिएको स्थान वा विशेष वस्तुको नाम बुझाउने शब्द।
Definition: A word that represents a specific person, place, or thing. These are unique names.

उदाहरणहरू (Examples):

  • राम (Ram) - राम विद्यालय जान्छ। (Ram goes to school.)
  • पोखरा (Pokhara) - पोखरा धेरै सुन्दर छ। (Pokhara is very beautiful.)
  • सगरमाथा (Mt. Everest) - सगरमाथा संसारको अग्लो हिमाल हो। (Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world.)
Note: Like English, Proper Nouns in Nepali always refer to one specific entity. However, in Nepali script, there is no concept of "Capital Letters" for Proper Nouns.

२. जातिवाचक नाम (Common Noun)

परिभाषा: एउटै प्रकारका धेरै वस्तु वा प्राणीहरूको साझा नाम वा पूरै जाति बुझाउने शब्द।
Definition: A name used for a whole class or category of people, animals, or things.

उदाहरणहरू (Examples):

  • नदी (River) - नेपालमा धेरै नदीहरू छन्। (There are many rivers in Nepal.)
  • कुकुर (Dog) - कुकुरले घरको रक्षा गर्छ। (The dog guards the house.)
  • सहर (City) - यो सहर निकै ठूलो छ। (This city is quite big.)
Note: A Proper Noun (e.g., Bagmati) falls under a Common Noun (e.g., River).

३. द्रव्यवाचक नाम (Material Noun)

परिभाषा: गन्न नसकिने तर नाप्न वा तौलिन सकिने वस्तु वा पदार्थको नाम।
Definition: Names of materials, substances, or uncountable things that can be measured or weighed but not counted as individual units.

उदाहरणहरू (Examples):

  • पानी (Water) - मलाई एक गिलास पानी दिनुहोस्। (Give me a glass of water.)
  • सुन (Gold) - सुन एक बहुमूल्य धातु हो। (Gold is a precious metal.)
  • चामल (Rice) - आज मैले चामल किनेँ। (I bought rice today.)
Note: In English, these are often called "Uncountable Nouns." You don't say "one water" or "two golds" in either language.

४. भाववाचक नाम (Abstract Noun)

परिभाषा: देख्न वा छुन नसकिने तर मनले अनुभव गर्न सकिने गुण, अवस्था वा भावना बुझाउने शब्द।
Definition: Names of things that cannot be seen or touched but can be felt or experienced, such as emotions, qualities, or conditions.

उदाहरणहरू (Examples):

  • माया (Love) - आमाको माया निस्वार्थ हुन्छ। (A mother's love is selfless.)
  • रिस (Anger) - रिसले मानिसलाई हानि गर्छ। (Anger harms a person.)
  • बचपन (Childhood) - बचपनका दिनहरू रमाइला हुन्छन्। (Childhood days are fun.)
Note: These nouns usually don't have a plural form in Nepali (e.g., we don't say "Angers").

५. समूहवाचक नाम (Collective Noun)

परिभाषा: धेरै व्यक्ति वा वस्तुहरूको समूह वा झुण्डलाई एउटै नामले बुझाउने शब्द।
Definition: A word that refers to a group of people, animals, or things as a single unit.

उदाहरणहरू (Examples):

  • हुल (Crowd/Flock) - त्यहाँ मानिसहरूको ठूलो हुल छ। (There is a big crowd of people there.)
  • ताँती (Queue/Line) - कमिलाको ताँती चिनीतिर जाँदैछ। (A line of ants is going towards the sugar.)
  • टोली (Team) - हाम्रो टोलीले खेल जित्यो। (Our team won the game.)
Note: Even though a Collective Noun represents many members, the word itself is often treated as a singular unit in sentence structure.
