The Butterfly Life Cycle
4 Biological Stages of Complete Metamorphosis
Every butterfly goes through a total transformation known as complete metamorphosis. Explore the four distinct steps from a tiny egg to a flying adult insect with these clear classroom notes.
Stage 1: The Egg
Step 1The cycle begins when an adult female butterfly lays tiny, individual eggs on a plant leaf. These host plants provide the essential environment and immediate source of food for the young insect as soon as it emerges.
Stage 2: The Caterpillar (Larva)
Step 2When the egg hatches, a hungry larva called a caterpillar emerges. Its primary job is to eat leaves constantly, store energy, and grow incredibly fast. As it expands, it regularly molts (sheds its old skin).
Stage 3: The Chrysalis (Pupa)
Step 3Once fully grown, the caterpillar wraps itself inside a hard protective shell called a chrysalis or pupa. On the outside, it looks perfectly still, but inside, its body structure goes through an intense biological change.
Stage 4: The Adult Butterfly
Step 4Finally, a fully developed adult butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. After inflating its wings with fluid and drying them in the sun, it flies away to feed on plant nectar and lay new eggs to restart the cycle.
